Constitution

The Libraries Board of SA has approved a new Constitution for the Foundation, and this will be adopted at the forthcoming AGM.

Adelaide Now and the Advertiser recently featured an article on the State Library Foundation’s Digitisation of Film project, the 2012-2013 fundraising project.

“The State Library film collection includes moving pictures in obsolete formats including Super 8 and 16mm.

To preserve and share the more than 7500 films, the library’s In-House Digitising project requires a $200,000 digital film scanner.

“It’s very important . . . for people to be able to access the past of their community,” Mr Hicks said. “A lot of that is preserved in individuals’ amateur records of events. There’s something really charming about seeing what life in Ceduna was like 50 or 80 years ago.”

One of the oldest films in the library’s archives shows horse-drawn fire engines travelling down Wakefield St in 1912. Another shows off bathing beauties at the Adelaide city baths in what is now the Festival Centre plaza.

The collection includes films taken by Sir John Langdon Bonython in the 1930-40s and footage by Jim Long on his property, which later became the Deep Creek Conservation Park.

Chair of the State Library Foundation board Carolyn Pickles said it was a “terrific project” that was bringing light to SA’s past. The Foundation has already received donations adding up to $50,000.

“We’re counting on South Australians to support this project,” Ms Pickles said.

The Library has over 7500 films documenting South Australia, the oldest of which is a film showing horse-drawn fire engines travelling down Wakefield Street  in 1912.
